Accessing alternative formats on assessment day

If requested in advance, coloured background, dyslexia font, and large print will automatically appear on a student’s assessment on assessment day.

Audio must be activated on the student’s device by the test administrator or IT staff before the assessment by launching one of the permitted text readers: NVDA (PC), ChromeVox (Chromebook), or VoiceOver (Mac).

 NVDA (PC)

NVDA by NV Access is a free text reader that works with Microsoft Windows as a stand-alone program. NVDA will read the alt tag of an image when a user hovers over the image with a mouse. The voice can be changed by going into:

Preferences ⇾ Settings ⇾ Speech ⇾ Change Synthesizer to Microsoft Speech API version 5

 ChromeVox (Chromebook)

ChromeVox by Google is built into the Chrome OS for text reading. To start ChromeVox, press the Control, Alt, and Z keys together. Hold the Search button, click the left mouse button, and hover over the image with the mouse, and
ChromeVox will read the alt tag of an image.

 VoiceOver (Mac)

VoiceOver by Apple is built into the Mac OS for text reading. To start VoiceOver, press the Command and F5 keys together.
VoiceOver will read the alt tag of an image when a user hovers over the image with a mouse.
