The first-ever CMEC Aboriginal Educators' Symposium will be held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, on June 29 and 30, 2015.

About the event

The symposium brings together invited delegations of Aboriginal educators and Elders from across Canada to identify how to encourage more Aboriginal people to pursue a teaching career and ensure that seasoned Aboriginal educators remain in the profession and flourish.

Participants

A delegation of six Aboriginal educators and one Aboriginal Elder from each province and territory has been invited to participate. This event is limited to invited delegations so as to facilitate open exchanges, sharing, and critical reflection. Delegates will benefit from keynote presentations, panels of Indigenous scholars, breakout sessions, talking circles, and Elders' sharing.

Education ministers will join the proceedings on Tuesday afternoon, June 30, to hear participants' thoughts on teacher recruitment, training, and retention in the context of Aboriginal education in Canada

Goals

The goal of the symposium is to provide a forum for Aboriginal educators to discuss, based on their own personal experiences, how best to:

  • attract more Aboriginal people to teaching careers;
  • encourage existing Aboriginal educators to remain in the profession;
  • support Aboriginal students entering the field of education; and
  • support all Aboriginal educators in their training and career development.

A final report will be made available to the public on the CMEC Web site.
