Each year, thousands of secondary-school students in Canada transfer from one province or territory to another. One of the major concerns associated with such transfers is the seamless continuity of a student’s education. How to achieve such continuity gives rise to a number of questions, for example: Will it be possible for a recently relocated student to enter their new school without gaps or duplications in their studies? Will it be possible for the student to complete school in the same number of years as they would have had a transfer not taken place? Will the student have all the prerequisites necessary to pursue postsecondary education in their new province or territory?
Secondary Education in the Provinces and Territories of Canada: A Student Transfer Guide 2023–24 is a tool that provides useful curricular information from each of Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories. The guide should be used in conjunction with official documents, such as student transcripts, which often remain the best source of information for determining the most appropriate course of studies for recently relocated students. The Student Transfer Guide offers additional and supplementary material to help decision-makers place students.
Provinces and territories strive to meet the needs of their students and do so in an environment where changes and advancements regularly occur. In particular, curriculum development is a continuous process, and as such, programs of studies are subject to change.
