CMEC promotes literacy by focusing on pan-Canadian and international literacy events that celebrate the value and importance of literacy in all its forms and encourage people to take an active part in their own learning.

Some examples of the promotion of literacy:

  • International Literacy Day Every year on September 8, Canada joins the international community to mark UNESCO's International Literacy Day (ILD) which underscores the fundamental importance of literacy in human development.

  • Family Literacy Day A Canada-wide awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada, Family Literacy Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

  • International Adult Learners Weeks (IALW) IALW has been celebrated in Canada since 2002, under the auspices of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The purpose of this week is to raise awareness about the importance of adult literacy and lifelong learning.
