Education Ministers Voice Appreciation for Teachers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, October 4, 2007 -- “CMEC is proud to be among the thousands of organizations in over 100 countries to celebrate World Teachers' Day on October 5,” noted the Honourable Kelly Lamrock, the recently elected Chair of CMEC. “On behalf of ministers of education across the country, I want to salute all teachers in Canada and around the world for their valuable contributions to students, schools, and communities. Canada is a world leader in educational achievements and innovation, and our teachers play a central role in inspiring youth and adult learners to succeed academically and contribute to a civil society in which we all want to live.”

In Canada, there are approximately 375,000 teachers in public schools, colleges, and universities delivering education to learners of all ages. Around the world, there are more than 60 million teachers providing education to children and youth.

Through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Education International, and numerous other organizations, events are being planned worldwide to pay tribute to teachers for their ongoing efforts to provide quality education to young people.

CMEC is an intergovernmental body composed of the ministers responsible for elementary-secondary and advanced education from the provinces and territories.  Through CMEC, ministers share information and undertake projects in areas of mutual interest and concern.
