Appointment of an Interim Executive Director at the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada
TORONTO, February 2, 2026 – The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) announces that it has appointed Eric Théroux with the mandate to serve as interim executive director of CMEC through December 2026.
Mr. Théroux brings to this role more than 36 years of experience in the Quebec public service, having served as both a lawyer and a senior manager. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has held several key leadership positions, including president of the Commission de la fonction publique du Québec, assistant deputy minister responsible for the fight against climate change at the Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, and assistant deputy minister for francophone and multilateral affairs at the Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie.
In his role as interim executive director, Mr. Théroux will lead CMEC in supporting provinces and territories as they work together to advance shared priorities in education. His mandate includes fulfilling the education ministers’ stated goal to review and refocus CMEC’s priorities to more effectively support discussions on common education challenges facing provinces and territories.
Mr. Théroux stated, “I am enthusiastic about undertaking this mandate alongside CMEC, working in service of Canada’s provinces and territories in a field under their constitutional jurisdiction—education—which is at the heart of the future of our societies across the country.”
Mr. Théroux’s extensive experience in public administration and intergovernmental affairs will support CMEC’s ongoing work to facilitate collaboration and dialogue among provinces and territories.
