Dr. Raymond Théberge named Director General of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada

Toronto, June 8, 2005 -- Ministers of Education announced today the appointment of Dr. Raymond Théberge as Director General of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC).  Dr. Théberge will begin his tenure on June 20, 2005.

“Dr. Théberge brings to CMEC a wealth of expertise in the field of education,” said the Honourable Jean-Marc Fournier, Minister of Education, Recreation and Sport for Quebec and current Chair of CMEC.  “His appointment comes at a time of renewal for CMEC, and his unique combination of academic, government, and administrative experience will serve ministers well as they move forward on an impressive array of pan-Canadian education initiatives.”

Dr. Théberge comes to CMEC from the Department of Education, Citizenship and Youth, Manitoba, where he was Assistant Deputy Minister of the Bureau de l'éducation française.  He is also a former Dean of Education at St. Boniface College and holds a doctorate in linguistics from McGill University.  Dr. Théberge has published extensively in the fields of French minority-language education and second-language learning.

CMEC is an intergovernmental body composed of the ministers responsible for elementary-secondary and advanced education from the provinces and territories.  Through CMEC, ministers share information and undertake projects in areas of mutual interest and concern.
