CMEC Releases 10th Edition of the Student Transfer Guide

TORONTO, August 11, 2009 – The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), released today the 10th edition of Secondary Education in Canada: A Student Transfer Guide. First published in 1978, the guide provides teachers and guidance counselors with key curricular information from Canada's 10 provinces and three territories in order to facilitate students' integration into a new school after they have moved from another jurisdiction.
Each year, thousands of secondary-school students in Canada transfer from one province or territory to another. One of the major concerns associated with such transfers is the seamless continuity of a student's education. CMEC believes that students who move from one jurisdiction to another should have access to a program of study that ensures their education is as continuous as possible and allows them to graduate within the same timeframe.
“Jurisdictions have worked collaboratively, through CMEC, to provide an updated transfer guide,” said the Honorouble Roland Haché, Minister of Education for New Brunswick and Chair of CMEC. “Through the guide, CMEC's vision for Learn Canada 2020 is further realized because it allows for increased learning opportunities and overall education outcomes.”
The guide has sections devoted to each jurisdiction, with specific information pertaining to the secondary-education curriculum of that jurisdiction. The guide should be used in conjunction with official documents, such as student transcripts, which may remain the best source for determining the most appropriate course of studies for transfer students.
