CMEC coordinates and participates in a number of key data and research activities and studies that provide indicators concerning education in Canada and respond to research objectives and priorities. Many of the activities are initiated through the Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC), a partnership between CMEC and Statistics Canada. CESC was established in 1989 to improve the quality and comparability of Canadian education data and to provide information that can inform policy development in education.
- Indicators – CESC produces Education Indicators in Canada: Report of the Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program (PCEIP) to provide a set of statistical measures on education systems in Canada for policy makers, practitioners, and the general public to monitor the performance of education systems across jurisdictions and over time.
- International Studies – CMEC coordinates Canada's participation in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's education indicators projects, including its annual publication, Education at a Glance.
