Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials

The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) at CMEC collects, organizes, and distributes information and acts as a national clearinghouse and referral service to support the recognition and portability of Canadian and international educational and occupational qualifications. 

CICIC was established in 1990 in response to its obligation resulting from Canada's ratification of the UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees concerning Higher Education in the States belonging to the Europe Region.  The convention promotes international mobility by advocating wider recognition of higher education and professional qualifications.

The CICIC Web site provides data, advice, and referrals on a number of specific topics:

  • Studying in Canada:  includes a directory of all institutions (other than elementary and secondary schools) that are recognized or authorized, and registered or licensed by the competent authorities in Canada. It also provides information on sources of student financial assistance and programs for studying French or English as an additional language.
  • Foreign Credential Evaluations:  provides information on how to have credentials assessed and recognized for employment and study in Canada, and refers visitors to the provincially-mandated credential evaluation services in the jurisdictions.  The CICIC site also features more than 200 occupational and professional profiles on the evaluation of foreign credentials, and directs visitors to relevant information on the recognition of professional qualifications.
  • Postsecondary Education in Canada:  includes detailed descriptions of postsecondary education in each jurisdiction, as well as information on quality assurance practices, credit transfer, and online and distance education.
  • Studying Abroad: offers information for Canadian students who are thinking of studying abroad and resources on higher education in various regions of the world.
